The municipality of Deçan is located on the edge of Bjeshket e Nemuna Mountains in western Kosovo, along Lumbardhi River. An estimated 60 000 Deçani inhabitants live within a territory of 372 km2. It holds the northern Dukagjini plane, being close to city of Gjakova and Peja.
The highest mountain peak of Gjeravica is situated in the municipality of Deçan, with an elevation of 2656 m, which makes the region an important touristic spot. The snow lasts from 6 to 8 months, up to three meters thick, offers a beautiful ski terrain with long ski paths. The traditional stone houses are among most preserved in Kosovo, giving the city a historical value worth visiting.
The Monastery of Deçan, built between 1327 and 1335, is situated near the town, around 2 km from the town center. Situated beside Bistrica and Deçani Rivers, it is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in Kosovo. While the monastery is in the suburbs of the town, in downtown Deçan you may see monuments of fallen martyrs during the last war in Kosovo;as the city has suffered a lot during the 1998 and 1999 war period.
Shabanajs Water Mill has been renovated, after the destruction during the last war. Its premises currently shelter the workshop of womens association Jeta, who craft and sell traditional artisan handcrafts.
